Second Grade
Mr. Greg Beach received funding for a second grade field trip to the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.

Here is a note we received from Greg:

I would like to thank you for all that you and the SEOP grant have done for our district and its students. I wish you could be there to see how excited these children are learning about water quality and the animals it affects.

Fourth Grade
Mr. Andrew McCarty received funding for one Water Cycle Model Activity Set and 3 Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics Kits to be used with the Robotics Club.

Here is an update on the Robotics Club activities:
Cherry Street Intermediate Lego Club (CSI LEGO CLUB) is in full swing thanks to your generous grant. Another teacher was able to obtain a grant for Lego Mindstorms as well. Therefore, he and I have teamed up to start this club. Together we are enriching the education of 45 students with this program.

Personally, I am responsible for the fourth grade team. I have 20 students set up in 5 person teams. Each team is working collaboratively to build the Mindstorms robots. This is really allowing for opportunities in teamwork and collaboration, while students are engaging in scientific inquiry and problem solving skills. In the future there will be even more opportunities for science and technology skill building as we begin to program the robots to perform certain tasks and work together to accomplish goals related to robot related functions.

We are also happy to have a parent volunteer bringing over 15 years of computer programming skills to help us program the robots once they are built.

Basic Club Format:
work in collaborative teams to build different robots.
use computer programming to get the robot to perform certain tasks.
use problem solving, communication skills, and teamwork!

Eventually, we would like to have competitions where the 4th and 5th grade teams compete against each other in performing robot tasks.
