This is an activity that my first grader did after reading the book Tunnels. He had to make a curved tunnel and a rectangular tunnel; then test to see which tunnel was stronger. His initial prediction was that the rectangular tunnel would be strongest, but as you can see, he learned that a curved tunnel had more strength. He told me that the next time he went under a tunnel he was going to see what shape it was to make sure it was strong enough for him to go through it!
